Massage
Massage therapy can not only help with the management of a health condition. It can also enhance wellness. Massage is the technique of manipulating body tissues, and there are several different types available, depending on the goals desired.
Practiced in most cultures throughout history, massage was one of the first tools used to help relieve pain. References to massage therapy have been found in many cultures ancient writings, and the practice dates back thousands of years.
In our culture, the most common form of massage is classical. This is the core of most training programs. Different techniques are named simply by their purpose (sports massage or clinical massage), while others more aptly describe their origins (Swedish or Shiatsu).
Massage therapy is used to relieve several different areas of pain. Massage can ease neck pain, low back pain, knee pain due to osteoarthritis, and some forms of headaches. Some fibromyalgia patients have realized benefits from massage therapy if the treatment is continued long enough, improving pain, depression, and anxiety.
Massage therapy is also used for sports injury rehabilitation, reducing stress, and aiding in general wellbeing. Deep tissue and trigger point massage techniques focus on myofascial trigger points, which are “muscle knots” that cause symptoms in other parts of the body and are painful when pressed.
