Spinal Adjustments
Spinal adjustments are used by specialists to manipulate the spinal column and other joints in the body using their hands or small special instruments. The manipulations move the joints to improve joint movement and function or to relieve pain. The joints are moved using controlled, sudden force, sometimes moving the joint back to its natural position.
Spinal adjustments are used to treat problems such as headaches, neck pain, or back pain and are available at the Family Medical Center. These adjustments can help with chronic pain or healing from an injury.
The initial consultation for spinal manipulation will include obtaining a health history and an examination. Describing the pain or injury will direct the exam and provide the information needed for a specialized treatment plan. Several adjustments may be needed, but typically six to 10 visits will provide maximal improvement.
During treatment, the patient is placed in different positions on a padded table. When the joints are adjusted, a popping or cracking sound may be heard. The adjustment itself is rarely painful, but the patient could experience some soreness for a day or two afterward in the area that was adjusted. Most patients prefer a little soreness in favor of pain relief in the joint.
